Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, was the Empress of Russia from 1762 until her death in 1796. Born in Germany as Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst, she rose to power through her marriage to Peter III of Russia in 1745. However, her husband's reign was short-lived, as he was overthrown just a few months after their wedding. Seizing the opportunity, Catherine took control of the government and began a reign marked by significant reforms and territorial expansion. This stunning portrait captures Catherine II in the prime of her reign, promenading through her gardens at Tsarskoye Selo, near St. Petersburg.
