EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished features and regal presence of Cardinal Jean Du Bellay (1492-1560), a prominent French prelate, archbishop, and diplomat of the Renaissance era. Born in Tours, France, Du Bellay rose to prominence in the Church and the diplomatic circles of the time. He was a prolific writer, penning works on various subjects including history, theology, and literature. Du Bellay's most notable literary contribution was "Defense and Illustration of the French Language," in which he championed the use of the French language in literature and advocated for its refinement and standardization. As a diplomat, Du Bellay served variously as the papal nuncio to Scotland, England, and Spain. He also played a key role in the Council of Trent, where he advocated for the use of the vernacular in religious services. As an archbishop, Du Bellay was appointed to the diocese of Paris in 1545. He is depicted here in his cardinal's robes, signifying his high rank in the Church. The cardinal's red hat, known as a galero, is adorned with tassels and the distinctive red velvet cap, or camauro, which sits atop it. The richly embroidered robes, adorned with gold and silver thread, and the ermine-trimmed cape, are symbols of his ecclesiastical authority and wealth. This portrait, a testament to the artistic and intellectual achievements of the Renaissance, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who left an indelible mark on French literature, the Church, and diplomacy.
