In July 1942, despite being wounded in one arm, Captain Upham fearlessly led an attack on a strong enemy position at El Ruweisat Ridge in the Western Desert. He single-handedly destroyed a tank and several guns and vehicles before returning to his company after having his wound dressed. His unwavering courage continued until he was severely wounded and captured by the enemy.
Prior to this incredible feat, Upham had already been awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during operations in Crete in May 1941.
