This 19th century print depicts the Battlefield of Cannae, the site of one of the most decisive battles in ancient history. The battle took place on August 2, 118 BC, during the Second Punic War, when the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca successfully routed the Roman army, led by consuls Publius Terentius Varro and Lucius Aemilius Paullus, despite being greatly outnumbered. The Romans are estimated to have lost around 50,000 soldiers, while Hannibal's losses were a mere 5,700. The Battle of Cannae is considered a turning point in the Second Punic War and a significant military victory for Hannibal.
