The battle took place on August 2, 118 BC, during the Second Punic War, when the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca successfully routed the Roman army, led by consuls Publius Terentius Varro and Lucius Aemilius Paullus, despite being greatly outnumbered. The Romans are estimated to have lost around 50,000 soldiers, while Hannibal's losses were a mere 5,700.
