EDITORS COMMENTS
Bourgeois Attacked: The Religious Upheaval of Munster in 1535 This evocative image captures the chaos and turmoil that engulfed the city of Munster, Germany, during the tumultuous year of 1535. The scene depicts the aftermath of an order given by the radical religious leader, John of Leyden, also known as Jan van Bockelsen, to attack and expel the bourgeois citizens from the city. Bockelsen, a charismatic Anabaptist preacher, had seized control of Munster in 1534, promising a utopian society based on biblical principles. However, as his rule became increasingly tyrannical, many citizens grew disillusioned and began to resist. In an attempt to consolidate his power, Bockelsen ordered attacks on the bourgeois population, accusing them of being heretics and enemies of the new order. The citizens, many of whom were wealthy merchants and artisans, were rounded up and their properties were confiscated. Faced with the prospect of losing everything they had worked for, many chose to leave the city rather than submit to Bockelsen's rule. The exodus of the bourgeois population weakened the economic and social fabric of Munster, leaving the city vulnerable to external forces. The image of citizens being attacked and forced to leave their homes is a stark reminder of the religious and political upheaval that swept through Munster in the 16th century. The events of 1535 marked a turning point in the city's history, paving the way for a long and difficult recovery. This print, with its powerful imagery and historical significance, offers a glimpse into a turbulent chapter of European history.
