EDITORS COMMENTS
In this underwater photograph, a Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) named Blue, gives birth to her new-born calf in the crystal-clear waters of Oltremare Lagoon in Riccione, Italy. The pregnancy, which lasted an extraordinary 54 weeks, came to an end on July 2nd, 2010, at 8:02 am. The male calf, whose father is Micha, a 25-year-old dolphin from Cuba, entered the world weighing approximately 16 kg and measuring 120cm in length. Within just 2 and a half hours of birth, the newborn began to take its mother's milk, feeding at an average of two to three times per hour. After 20 days, the calf's weight had already increased to 31 kg. Blue, a female born in Delphinarium Rimini Italy in 1996, cradles her newborn with tender affection, nurturing and protecting her young one in the safety of the lagoon. This heartwarming moment captures the essence of the natural world, showcasing the intricacies of the dolphin's reproductive cycle and the powerful bond between mother and child. The sequence of events, from pregnancy to birth, highlights the beauty and complexity of marine life and the importance of their continued survival in our oceans. Blue and Micha's story is a testament to the love and care that these remarkable creatures exhibit, both in the wild and in captivity. As we witness this new life emerge, we are reminded of the importance of preserving their habitats and ensuring their continued existence for future generations to marvel at and learn from.
