EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite book plate, titled "A Book Plate for J L Propert, Esq," is an illustration by the renowned artist Aubrey Beardsley, published in Volume I of The Yellow Book in April 1894. The image features a refined yet slightly disdainful-looking woman, dressed in the fashion of the late 19th century, holding a candle and gazing down at a pierrot figure. The pierrot, a traditional Italian comic character, is depicted with a melancholic expression, his white face and red nose contrasting sharply with the elegant woman's attire. John Lumsden Propert, the intended recipient of this book plate, was a Scottish lawyer and writer who contributed to The Yellow Book, a literary magazine known for its avant-garde and decadent aesthetic. Beardsley's illustration perfectly encapsulates the magazine's distinctive style, with its intricate lines, bold contrasts, and erotic undertones. The book plate, also known as a libris or ex-libris, is a traditional way of personalizing books. In this case, it serves as a testament to Propert's literary interests and his association with The Yellow Book. The image of the woman and pierrot, with their enigmatic expressions and the flickering candle, evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue, adding to the allure of the book and its owner. This beautiful and intriguing book plate is a rare example of the artistic collaboration between Beardsley and Propert, showcasing the talents of two influential figures in the late Victorian era. It is a fascinating glimpse into the world of The Yellow Book and the decadent aesthetic that defined it.
