EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the miraculous birth of Lord Krishna, the 8th incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, as described in ancient Indian mythology. Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudev in Mathura, India, during a time when Devaki's wicked brother, King Kamsa, ruled over the land. Fearing that Krishna would grow up to usurp his throne, Kamsa had imprisoned Devaki and Vasudev, intending to kill their newborn child as soon as it was born. But the divine will intervened, and Krishna was born under extraordinary circumstances. As foretold, the prison cell miraculously transformed into a beautiful garden, and Krishna was carried to the countryside by his father, Vasudev, to be raised in safety by the cowherd couple Yashoda and Nanda in the village of Vrindavan. This historical and mythological scene showcases the intricate details of Indian art, with Krishna's mother, Devaki, lying on a bed of flowers, her face expressing a mixture of joy and relief as she gazes upon her newborn son. Vasudev, dressed in royal attire, stands beside her, his hands raised in reverence as he offers the infant Krishna to Yashoda, who cradles him lovingly in her arms. The peaceful countryside setting, with its lush greenery and serene atmosphere, provides a stark contrast to the tumultuous events that had unfolded in the royal palace. This image serves as a testament to the power of love and divine intervention, as Krishna, the future savior of the world, begins his journey through life in the care of humble and loving parents in the countryside.
