Krishna Revolutionary

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Shyamji Krishnavarma, an Indian revolutionary, lawyer, and journalist, in the year 1909. Krishnavarma, born as Shyamji Krishna Nakhua, was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, advocating for self-rule and social reform through various means. Born in Gujarat, India, Krishnavarma moved to London in 1883 to study law at Lincoln's Inn. He became deeply involved in Indian nationalist circles and founded the Indian Home Rule Society in 1905, which aimed to raise awareness and funds for the Indian independence movement in the UK. Krishnavarma's journal, The Indian Sociologist, was a leading voice for Indian nationalism and published articles advocating for non-violent resistance and self-rule. Despite his non-violent approach, Krishnavarma was arrested in 1910 for his involvement in the Indian independence movement and was deported back to India. He continued his activism in India, but was eventually arrested again and exiled to the Andaman Islands. This photograph of Krishnavarma, taken in 1909, shows him in his prime, with a stern yet determined expression on his face. He is dressed in Western attire, reflecting his education and professional background as a lawyer. The photograph is a testament to Krishnavarma's unwavering commitment to the Indian independence movement and his role as a leading figure in the Indian diaspora in London during the early 20th century.
