EDITORS COMMENTS
Bassville Assassinated: A Tragic Episode in French Revolutionary History This poignant image captures the moment of tragedy that unfolded in Rome on March 21, 1793, when French diplomat Nicolas Jean de Bassville met his untimely end. Bassville, a devoted supporter of the French Revolution, had imprudently sought to rouse the Romans to sympathy for the cause, addressing a large crowd in the Piazza del Popolo with fervor and conviction. However, his impassioned words struck a nerve with the conservative and pro-papal factions in the crowd, who saw the French Revolution as a threat to their traditional way of life. In a violent outburst, Bassville was set upon by an enraged mob, brutally assassinated in the heart of the city. The shocking news of Bassville's death reached France, where his family was left to grieve and cope with the loss of their beloved husband and father. In a remarkable display of compassion and solidarity, Pope Pius VI, who had long been an opponent of the French Revolution, ordered that a generous sum of 300,000 livres be paid to Bassville's family as a gesture of goodwill and support. This historical print, titled "Bassville Assassinated," is a poignant reminder of the complex and often volatile political landscape of the late 18th century. It serves as a testament to the power of words and the unintended consequences of impassioned speech, as well as the unexpected ways in which adversaries can come together in times of tragedy.
