Bassville, a devoted supporter of the French Revolution, had imprudently sought to rouse the Romans to sympathy for the cause, addressing a large crowd in the Piazza del Popolo with fervor and conviction. However, his impassioned words struck a nerve with the conservative and pro-papal factions in the crowd, who saw the French Revolution as a threat to their traditional way of life. In a violent outburst, Bassville was set upon by an enraged mob, brutally assassinated in the heart of the city.
