EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment at a French zoo from the early 1900s, showcasing a group of black-faced kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) sitting comfortably on a bed of straw. The western grey kangaroo, as this subspecies is known, is the largest and most common kangaroo species found across almost the entire southern part of Australia. Their range extends from just south of Shark Bay in Western Australia to coastal South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. The kangaroos in this image appear relaxed and content, a testament to the care and attention they received in the zoo environment. The black-face markings on their forearms and chest are a distinctive feature of this subspecies, which is also known as the Kangaroo Island kangaroo when found on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The western grey kangaroo is a macropod, a type of marsupial that has large hind legs and a long, powerful tail used for balance and support. These animals are herbivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation, including grasses, leaves, and shoots. They are also known for their unique method of hopping, which allows them to cover long distances quickly and efficiently. This photograph is part of the Box 209 Boswell collection, which showcases both old and new images of French zoos and their inhabitants. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a window into the world of animals in captivity during the early 20th century.
