This evocative photograph captures the moment of determination and camaraderie among American troops as they prepare to move a munitions convoy through the battlefield of St. Mihiel, north eastern France during the First World War. Circa 1918. The First United States Army, led by General John J. Pershing, had been training in France since June 1917, and the St. Mihiel Offensive, also known as the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, was their first major battle as part of the Allied forces. The soldiers, dressed in their field uniforms and wearing helmets, are seen pulling a heavy tin filled with munitions, while their horses, also outfitted for the rigors of war, wait patiently nearby. The artillery in the background adds to the sense of urgency and the vast expanse of the battlefield stretches out beyond the frame.
