EDITORS COMMENTS
Amelia Opie, Née Alderson (1769-1853): A Literary and Matrimonial Union This evocative portrait captures Amelia Opie, a prominent English writer and the second wife of renowned painter John Opie (1761-1807). Amelia, born Amelia Alderson, was a prolific author whose literary career spanned over five decades. She is best known for her novels, including "Father and Daughter" (1801) and "The Father and the Daughter" (1809), which dealt with themes of love, loss, and morality. Amelia's first marriage, to the Reverend William Opie, ended in tragedy when he died by suicide in 1794, leaving her with five young children to raise on her own. In 1803, she married John Opie, who was 12 years her junior. Their union was a creative one, as Amelia continued to write and publish novels, while John painted portraits and landscapes. Their home became a gathering place for artists, writers, and intellectuals. Despite their age difference and the societal disapproval of their marriage due to its being a second one for Amelia, their relationship was a strong and supportive one. John painted several portraits of Amelia, including this one, which showcases her intellectual and artistic qualities. The portrait, created in 1853, the year of Amelia's death, is a poignant reminder of their enduring bond. Amelia Opie's literary contributions and her marriage to John Opie continue to be of interest to scholars and enthusiasts of English literature and art history. This portrait, with its captivating depiction of Amelia's expressive eyes and thoughtful gaze, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who defied societal norms and left a lasting legacy in both literature and art.
