EDITORS COMMENTS
Alfonso VII, also known as Alfonso Raimundez or Alphonse the Emperor, is depicted in this stunning 12th-century colored engraving from the year 1135. At this time, Alfonso was the King of Galicia, having taken the throne in 1111, and later becoming the King of León and Castile in 1126. In this grand investiture ceremony held in the Cathedral of León, Alfonso was proclaimed as the Emperor of Spain. The image captures the solemnity and grandeur of the occasion, with Alfonso dressed in imperial robes, including a heavy cloak and a burgundy cape, adorned with a crown upon his head. The bishop, standing to his right, holds the imperial banner aloft, while the crowd below, filled with jubilance and joy, looks on. A large crucifix is visible in the background, symbolizing the religious significance of the ceremony. The cathedral, with its intricate architecture and tall spires, serves as the backdrop for the investiture. The light from the candles illuminates the scene, casting long shadows and adding to the sense of importance and reverence. Alfonso, with a determined expression on his face, kneels before the bishop, ready to receive the imperial title that would solidify his position as a powerful ruler on the Iberian Peninsula. This engraving offers a glimpse into the medieval world, showcasing the pomp and circumstance of a royal investiture and the awe-inspiring architecture of the time. It is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Spain during the Middle Ages.
