A traditional English fete programme featured coconut shies, bingo, pony rides, catering and a beer tent, candy floss, and roundabouts. The day ended with a beauty contest, prize draw, and the election of Miss Sports Club. In the evening there was a fireworks display and a gala dance which continued until midnight. EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming print captures a delightful moment from the Gala Day held at the Laing Sports Ground in Elstree, Greater London, back in 1969. Two young children can be seen joyfully indulging in candy floss, their faces lit up with pure delight. The Gala Day was organized by Laing as a replacement for their annual Sports Day and it was filled with an array of exciting activities and attractions. The day started off with various sports events including hockey, tennis, bowls, and football tournaments hosted by the Sports Club. As the festivities continued, attendees enjoyed traditional English fete programs such as coconut shies, bingo games, pony rides, and even a beer tent. Of course, no fair or festival is complete without cotton candy or fairy floss! The sugary treat spun into fluffy clouds of sweetness brought smiles to everyone's faces. Roundabouts added to the excitement while families gathered under marquees to enjoy delicious catering options. As dusk settled in on this memorable day, there was a beauty contest followed by a prize draw where Miss Sports Club would be elected. To end things on a high note before bidding farewell to this magical event until next year's edition came around again; fireworks illuminated the night sky while attendees danced away at the gala dance that lasted well into midnight. Preserved through time within Historic England Archive's collection of memories from yesteryears like these photographs serve as reminders of simpler times filled with innocent childhood joys and community celebrations.
