The Southwold Life-boat making for the rescue of a ship's crew on the outer shoal, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The Southwold Life-boat making for the rescue of a ship's crew on the outer shoal, 1862. View of...a very gallant and prompt service rendered on the 28th January by the Southwold life-boat, belonging to the National Life-boat Institution, to a shipwrecked crew. "On the morning of that day (writes Lieutenant Simmons, R.N.) the life-boat put off and took five men and a dog from a small boat outside the outward shoal. There was a tremendous sea running at the time, so that none of the open boats could have got off, neither could the shipwrecked men have landed in their own boat through the heavy surf. They had left their vessel at two o'clock in the morning. She had sunk on Sizewell Bank, full of water, and proved to be the Princess Alice, of Ipswich. The little boat had been drifting about in the midst of fearful perils until the life-boat took the crew out and brought them safely on shore"...The number of lives saved by the life-boats of the society [the National Life-boat Institution] and other means since its formation is upwards of 12, 200'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from an unknown artist in 1862, depicts the Southwold life-boat making its way through the turbulent waters to the rescue of a distressed ship's crew on the outer shoal. The scene unfolds a very gallant and prompt service rendered by the Southwold life-boat, belonging to the National Life-boat Institution, on January 28, 1862. The photograph captures the life-boat bravely navigating the treacherous sea, with the crew determined to save the lives of the shipwrecked men. The morning of that day saw the life-boat put to action, taking five men and a dog from a small boat outside the outward shoal. The sea was in a state of turmoil, making it impossible for any open boats to venture out, let alone the shipwrecked men to land in their own boat due to the heavy surf. The men had abandoned their vessel, the Princess Alice of Ipswich, at 2 a.m. that morning, as it had sunk on Sizewell Bank, filling with water. The little boat had been drifting in the midst of fearful perils until the life-boat arrived and took the crew to safety. The National Life-boat Institution, which had formed several years prior to this event, had already saved over 12,200 lives through the heroic efforts of their life-boats and other means. This photograph serves as a testament to the invaluable role that the life-boat crews played in saving lives at sea during the 19th century. Their bravery and selflessness continue to inspire us today.
