The Prince of Wales Visit to the East: arrival of His Royal Highness at Beyrout, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The Prince of Wales Visit to the East: arrival of His Royal Highness at Beyrout, 1862. The future King Edward VII in the Middle East. Engraving from a sketch by M. Beauce, ...representing the arrival of his Royal Highness at Beyrout at five o'clock on the evening of the 5th of May last...a considerable number of people were assembled and welcomed the future King of England with an ardour altogether in keeping with the broiling state of the atmosphere at this season of the year - pure, cloudless, but almost insupportably hot. The Prince's reception on the Place des Cannons is depicted by M. Beauce with that fidelity for which he is so remarkable. The English, French, and Turkish vessels in the harbour fired a salute in honour of his Royal Highness, who, after gracefully acknowledging the cordial demonstration of the population of Beyrout, proceeded to the residence of the British Consul, where he took up his quarters...Such a scene of excitement as prevailed during the Prince's sojourn had not been witnessed at Beyrout since the memorable occasion of the arrival of the French expedition sent out to the relief of the persecuted Christians...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

Beauce, which represents the arrival of the Prince at five o'clock on the evening of May 5th. The atmosphere was described as pure, cloudless, but almost insupportably hot, yet this did not dampen the spirits of the crowd gathered to welcome the future King of England. The English, French, and Turkish vessels in the harbor fired a salute in his honor, and the Prince graciously acknowledged the cordial demonstration of the population of Beyrout.
