EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print showcases a poster from 1915, reproduced in 1944, that aimed to educate the British public about different types of aircraft used by both Britain and Germany during World War I. Created by an unknown artist and commissioned by the British government, this chart served as a vital tool for identification purposes. The caption on the poster emphasized the importance of familiarizing oneself with the appearance of British and German airships and aeroplanes to prevent unnecessary panic caused by friendly aircraft. The accompanying warning advised individuals to seek shelter immediately if hostile aircraft were spotted, preferably in basements or nearby houses. It also cautioned against standing in crowds or touching unexploded bombs. In rural areas, it was recommended to inform Naval, Military, or Police Authorities via telephone about any sightings of enemy aircraft, providing details such as time of appearance and flight direction. Taken from Nigel Tangye's book "Britain In The Air" published in London in 1944 under Collins' imprint (not related to commercial use), this photograph offers us a glimpse into wartime precautions taken by civilians during aerial attacks. It serves as a reminder of how communities came together amidst adversity while highlighting the significance of historical artifacts like this poster that played a crucial role in safeguarding lives during times of conflict.
