EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of M. Prior, a prominent English poet and diplomat from the late 17th to early 18th century. The image, taken in 1830 by an unknown creator, showcases Prior's stern yet contemplative expression as he gazes away from the camera. Matthew Prior was educated at Westminster School and Cambridge University's St Johns College before embarking on a successful career as a gentleman to King William III. He gained recognition for his contributions to The Examiner, a renowned newspaper of that time. However, his life took an unfortunate turn when Queen Anne passed away. Impeached and imprisoned by Robert Walpole, Prior faced adversity but managed to persevere through these challenging times. Eventually retiring from public life due to these circumstances, he left behind a legacy that continues to be celebrated in British literature. The photo is part of "Biographical Illustrations" by Alfred Howard, published in 1830 by Thomas Tegg, R. Griffin and Co. , J. Cumming in London, Glasgow, and Dublin respectively. This engraving offers us a glimpse into the past - capturing not only Matthew Prior's appearance but also reflecting upon the political climate during his lifetime. As we admire this historical artifact today, it serves as a reminder of both the triumphs and trials faced by influential figures like Matthew Prior throughout history.
