Lord Heathfield, 1787, (c1912). Painting in the National Gallery, London. Portrait of Governor of Gibraltar George Augustus Eliott (1717-1790) symbolically holding the key to the fortress, the Rock of Gibraltar obscured by smoke in the background. During the siege of 1779-1783 he held the British fortress against Spanish attack, and was made Baron Heathfield in 1787. British portrait painter Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) promoted the ‘ Grand Style in painting, and was a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He held the position of Principal Painter in Ordinary to the king. His work is held in galleries and museums around the world.
