Lord Carnarvon with Egyptian officials, Luxor, Egypt, 1922. Artist: Harry Burton
Lord Carnarvon with Egyptian officials, Luxor, Egypt, 1922. Chatting on the terrace of the Winter Palace Hotel. Left to right: Abd El Aziz Yahieh Bey, Governor of Kena; Lord Carnavon (1866-1923); Mohamed Fahmy Bey, Momour Markay, Luxor; Sheikh Ahmed Shaker, Judge of Luxor. A keen egyptologist, Carnarvon was archaeologist Howard Carters financial backer in his excavations in the Valley of the Kings. The discovery of Tutankhamuns tomb in 1922 was one of the most astounding discoveries in archaeology. Tutankhamun was a previously unknown pharaoh whose name had been eradicated from historical records by one of his successors because of his association with the heretical pharaoh Akhenaten, who was Tutankhamuns father-in-law. Consequently his tomb, uniquely, had remained undisturbed by grave robbers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in Luxor, Egypt, in 1922. Lord Carnarvon, the renowned British archaeologist and egyptologist Howard Carter's financial backer, is seen conversing with Egyptian officials on the terrace of the Winter Palace Hotel. The men gathered here include Abd El Aziz Yahieh Bey, Governor of Kena; Mohamed Fahmy Bey; Momour Markay from Luxor; and Sheikh Ahmed Shaker, Judge of Luxor. Lord Carnarvon's passion for Egyptology led him to support Carter's excavations in the Valley of the Kings. Their joint efforts would soon lead to one of history's most astounding discoveries – Tutankhamun's tomb. This previously unknown pharaoh had been erased from historical records due to his association with Akhenaten, a heretical pharaoh who was also Tutankhamun's father-in-law. As a result, his tomb remained untouched by grave robbers until its discovery in 1922. The image showcases not only the significance of this archaeological find but also highlights the cultural exchange between British and Egyptian officials during that time period. The men are dressed impeccably in their traditional attire – fez hats and tarbooshes – as they engage in deep conversation around a table on the terrace. Harry Burton skillfully captured this momentous occasion through his lens, immortalizing an important chapter in both ancient history and international collaboration within archaeology.
