EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "L'Achilleion, transformé en ambulance, est confié à la garde de nos alpins; le géant Teuton élevé par Guillaume II à la mémoire d'Achille," was captured by Robert Vaucher in 1916. The image is part of the "Collection de la Guerre IV" published in the French magazine "L'Illustration" during the January, February, March, April, May, and June months of that year. The photograph depicts the iconic Achilleion Palace located in Corfu, Greece. The palace, which was originally built as a tribute to the Greek mythological hero Achilles, had been commandeered as a military hospital during World War I. In this image, we see the palace's grand exterior, with snow-capped mountains in the background. The once majestic statue of Achilles, which stood proudly at the palace, has been transformed into an ambulance. French Alpine soldiers stand guard, adding a somber and wartime atmosphere to the scene. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the transformation of the once luxurious and peaceful palace into a military hospital during the conflict. The image also highlights the impact of the war on cultural and historical sites, as well as the role of the military in protecting and preserving them. Robert Vaucher was a renowned French photographer known for his work documenting the First World War. His photographs offer a unique perspective on the conflict, capturing both the harsh realities of war and the resilience of those who fought in it.
