Great seal of Henry III

Great seal of King Henry III (1207-1272). Henry III ruled England for fifty-six years from 1216 to his death. Medieval English monarchs did not use numbers after their names, and his contemporaries knew him as Henry of Winchester. He was the first child king in England since the Norman Conquest. Despite his long reign, his personal accomplishments were slim and he was a political and military failure. England, however, prospered during his century and his greatest monument is Westminster, which he made the seat of his government, and where he expanded the abbey as a shrine to Edward the Confessor. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Great Seal of King Henry III, who ruled England for an impressive fifty-six years from 1216 until his death. Known as Henry of Winchester to his contemporaries, he was the first child king in England since the Norman Conquest. Despite his long reign, Henry III's personal accomplishments were modest and he faced numerous political and military setbacks. However, it is during this period that England flourished, with Westminster becoming a testament to his legacy. As the seat of government, Henry expanded the abbey into a magnificent shrine dedicated to Edward the Confessor. This awe-inspiring engraving captures not only the monarch himself but also depicts elements such as warfare and armor that were prevalent during this medieval era. The image portrays King Henry III majestically mounted on a horse, symbolizing both power and authority. The monochrome effect adds depth and intensity to this historic moment frozen in time. It serves as a reminder of an influential ruler whose reign may have been marked by challenges but ultimately contributed to England's prosperity. This remarkable print is part of Cassells Illustrated History of England collection and offers us a glimpse into one of Britain's most significant historical periods through artistry and detail.
