EDITORS COMMENTS
The Departure of the Grand Duke Constantine of Russia, from Plymouth, captured in this 1845 print drawn by Mr. N. M. Condy, is a remarkable depiction of a historic royal visit to England. The image showcases the grandeur and power associated with this momentous event. In the foreground, we see the Imperial Majesty's Ingermanland, an impressive warship armed with 74 guns and flying Admiral Lutke's flag. On board is none other than Grand Duke Constantine himself, bidding farewell to England after his visit. Following closely behind is the Vaarrchafsky, a beautiful corvette boasting 30 guns. As these majestic vessels set sail from Plymouth harbor, they pass by several British naval ships including the Queen flagship under Sir John West's command: Albion, Vanguard, Rodney, Canopus, Superb President - all firing a Royal salute and manning their yards as a sign of respect for their distinguished guest. This scene was considered one of the most magnificent sights witnessed at that time. The engraving by Mr. N. M. Condy perfectly captures the grandeur and significance of this departure. The print not only serves as a visual record but also symbolizes diplomatic relations between two powerful nations during the 19th century – Russia and Britain. It reminds us of historical events that shaped international politics while highlighting technological advancements in armaments during that era. This image from "Illustrated London News" transports us back in time to witness an extraordinary moment in history when royalty crossed borders and left lasting impressions on both sides.
