EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Blanchisseuses de St. Domingue" (Laundresses of Saint Domingue) by Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur, dates back to the late 18th century, around 1797. The engraving, part of the larger series "Costumes de Differents Pays" (Costumes of Different Countries), offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the Caribbean region, specifically in Saint Domingue, which is now modern-day Haiti. Four women, dressed in traditional attire, are depicted in this full-length, hand-colored engraving. They are engaged in the arduous task of doing laundry, a common occupation for enslaved Africans and their descendants in the Caribbean. One woman is shown carrying a baby on her back, while another balances a large basket of clothes on her head. A third woman is in the process of washing clothes in a nearby stream, while the fourth woman is seen hanging clothes out to dry on a makeshift line. The women's clothing reflects the diverse cultural influences of the region. Their dresses are colorful and intricately designed, with various patterns and textures. The use of hand-tinting adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a visual feast for the eyes. This print is an important ethnographic and historical record of the lives of enslaved people in the Caribbean during the 18th century. It offers a glimpse into their daily lives and the occupations that defined their existence. Today, it is housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), serving as an invaluable addition to the museum's collection of heritage art and historical records.
