Four women, dressed in traditional attire, are depicted in this full-length, hand-colored engraving. They are engaged in the arduous task of doing laundry, a common occupation for enslaved Africans and their descendants in the Caribbean. One woman is shown carrying a baby on her back, while another balances a large basket of clothes on her head. A third woman is in the process of washing clothes in a nearby stream, while the fourth woman is seen hanging clothes out to dry on a makeshift line.
