The Burning of Covent-Garden Theatre - Flight of the Masqueraders, 1856. Creator: Unknown

The Burning of Covent-Garden Theatre - Flight of the Masqueraders, 1856. Illustration to a poem suggested by a theatre fire. Ho! ho! Tramp, tramp go the hurrying feet - Hark, hark to the rush in the crowded street! But wilder, and fiercer, and madder the rout; Shall resound through these walls ere my flames be crushed out; Hurrah! hurrah! for the Carnival, The rushing and crushing - the masque and the ball; Storm-loving rioters, merry men all, Hurrah! hurrah! for your Carnival! Fled - fled are the harpers, and hushed is their tuning, And trampled the women, all shrieking and swooning; Amid crackling and crashing more loud grows the roar - Ho! leap to the portal and batter the door. Hurrah! hurrah! for the Carnival, The gnashing and wailing - the masque and the ball! Self-loving revellers, merry men all, Hurrah ! hurrah! for your Carnival!'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

The Burning of Covent-Garden Theatre - Flight of the Masqueraders, 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an evocative and dramatic illustration that captures the chaos and excitement of a theatre fire in Victorian London. The image, created by an unknown artist, was published in the Illustrated London News in 1856, following a devastating fire that destroyed the Covent Garden Theatre. The illustration depicts a crowd of people, both men and women, in various stages of panic and excitement, as they rush through the streets in response to the fire. Some are seen carrying belongings or helping others, while others are more focused on the masquerade ball that was taking place inside the theatre at the time of the fire. The masqueraders, dressed in elaborate costumes, are shown fleeing the scene, their faces obscured by masks, as the flames and smoke billow out of the theatre's windows. The poem that accompanies the illustration, also from the Illustrated London News, adds to the sense of excitement and urgency. The lines "Hurrah! hurrah! for the Carnival, The rushing and crushing - the masque and the ball" emphasize the festive nature of the event, even in the midst of the disaster. The contrast between the joyous masquerade and the destructive fire creates a vivid and memorable scene that captures the spirit of the era. Despite the unknown identity of the artist, this illustration remains an important historical record of a significant event in Victorian London's cultural history. It offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine the sights, sounds, and emotions of the night the Covent Garden Theatre burned down. The image also serves as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of fire, and the importance of community and camaraderie in times of crisis.
