EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Elizabeth I engraved striking horizontal table clock, dating back to the late 16th century. Crafted from gilt brass by Nicholas Vallin, this remarkable timepiece is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the era. The clock's case features stepped-moulded sides adorned with intricate geometric bands, creating a visually stunning effect. Arcaded courtyard vistas are engraved on each central arch, offering different views that add depth and character to the piece. The latched base panel boasts an engraved border and bears the signature "VALLEN" within a scroll-engraved cartouche. Measuring 8.9x8.9 cm, the dial plate is made of gilt-brass and exhibits delicate fan spandrels surrounding a knurled later bezel. A white metal champleve chapter ring once raised on a pierced and engraved domed bell cover graces its center, featuring flowerhead half-hour markers and a 24-hour ring. The movement of this exceptional clock comprises square plates supported by four square section baluster pillars. It incorporates both fusee with later chain for the time train and fixed steel barrel for the strike train. The back plate includes steel turn catches (one replaced) while boasting a later plain balance cock for a brass balance to verge escapement. Although lacking its calibrated countwheel for strike on bell, this Elizabethan masterpiece remains an extraordinary example of horological artistry from centuries past.
