The Flagellation

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating woodcut print by Albrecht Dürer, created around 1496/97. This powerful image, measuring 38.5x27.7 cm, depicts a scene from the life of Christ that evokes both awe and empathy. In this poignant portrayal, we witness Jesus Christ bound to a pillar while being mercilessly whipped by soldiers. The artist's attention to detail captures the intensity of the moment as the crowd looks on in shock and horror. The dog at Jesus' feet adds an element of vulnerability and further emphasizes his humiliation. Dürer's masterful use of light and shadow creates a dramatic atmosphere that heightens the emotional impact of this biblical scene. The composition draws our gaze towards Jesus' suffering figure, emphasizing his sacrifice for humanity. This woodcut exemplifies Dürer's exceptional skill in capturing human emotion through intricate lines and textures. It belongs to the Northern Renaissance period, characterized by its focus on realism and meticulous craftsmanship. Displayed at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, UK, this artwork invites viewers to reflect upon themes such as punishment, sacrifice, and redemption within Christian religious beliefs.
