EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sih-Chida and Mahchsi-Karehde, two Mandan Indians captured by the talented artist Karl Bodmer. The image is part of an atlas called "Travels in the interior of North America" by Maximilian, Prince of Wied. In this tableau, Sih-Chida, also known as "Yellow Feather" stands on the left side wearing stunning beaded hairbows adorned with long strings of dentalium shells and beads. His attire includes a buffalo hide robe embellished with large quilled rosettes and an otter fur with fringed leather around his neck. Notably, he proudly displays red "heal trailers" which symbolize his battle exploits. On the right stands Mahchsi-karehde, a member of the Soldier Society. He dons a painted robe featuring intricate quilled rosettes along with leggings and moccasins. Large shell or metal disc earrings hang from his ears while wolf tails dangle from his heels to signify success in war. Both men wear feather headdresses atop their heads and carry hairbows as well. Additionally, Mahchsi-karehde wears a bearclaw necklace and carries an eagle-wing fan—a display of wealth and status within their culture. Commissioned in 1836 by Maximilian himself, Bodmer's illustrations beautifully capture these Native American individuals' rich cultural heritage during their travels through North America's interior.
