EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Town Hall in Newcastle upon Tyne, a masterpiece of architectural design by John Johnstone. The artwork, created with pencil and watercolor on paper, measures an impressive 114.5x68.3 cm and is housed at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. In this scene, we see the grandeur of the Town Hall with St Nicholas's Cathedral standing proudly behind it. Johnstone meticulously painted this piece to provide a glimpse into what the building would look like once completed. Collaborating with his architectural partner W. H. Knowles, he developed a stunning design that incorporated various elements such as the Corn Exchange and extended northwards to the Bigg Market. Constructed between 1855 and 1863, the Town Hall was not only a symbol of civic pride but also served multiple purposes within its walls. It housed council offices, a spacious concert hall, a hotel, several shops, and even a bank. Sadly, despite its significance in local history and architecture during Victorian times, the Town Hall met its demise after being replaced by the Civic Centre at Barras Bridge. Through this remarkable image captured by Bridgeman Images from Fine Art Finder's collection at eTyne & Wear Archives & Museums, we are transported back in time to witness both daily life around town halls during that era as well as appreciate Johnstone's exceptional talent for architectural drawing.
