EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the grandeur of The Saloon at Copped Hall, Essex. Taken from Giles Worsley's renowned book "England's Lost Houses" this image showcases the exquisite interior of a Palladian mansion that was tragically demolished. The Saloon, once part of a larger Elizabethan house, was rebuilt in 1758 by John Sanderson and Sir Roger Newdigate for John Conyers. However, it was Ernest Wythes who inherited the estate in 1887 and embarked on an ambitious remodeling project that transformed both the house and its gardens. The photograph, taken in 1910, reveals a stunning hexagonal patterned floor complemented by intricate wood paneling. The Victorian-era decorations add an air of elegance to this Georgian architectural masterpiece. Tragically, fire ravaged Copped Hall in 1916, reducing it to ruins. This photo serves as a poignant reminder of what once stood proudly on these grounds—a stately home filled with history and opulence. Preserved through time by English photographer Bridgeman Images, this print allows us to appreciate the beauty that once graced Copped Hall before its untimely demise. It is a testament to the importance of documenting our architectural heritage so future generations can marvel at these lost treasures. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image captured over a century ago, we are transported back to an era where craftsmanship and design were held in high regard—an era forever immortalized within these walls.
