EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to 17th century France, offering a glimpse into the life of a peasant during that time. The image is based on a 1679 print by Jean de Saint-Jean and beautifully handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard, bringing the scene to life with vibrant hues. The peasant depicted in this artwork stands as a representation of the common people who lived and worked in rural areas during this period. Dressed in traditional attire, he exudes an air of simplicity and resilience. His weathered face tells stories of hard work and perseverance amidst challenging circumstances. The attention to detail in this lithograph is remarkable, thanks to the talented artists A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie who collaborated on its creation under the supervision of Georges Duplessis. Published as part of "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) in Paris in 1867, it serves as a valuable resource for studying fashion history. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard's artistic skills shine through not only in this illustration but also throughout his career as an artist and book illustrator. His contributions to public buildings and churches further solidify his reputation as a versatile talent. As we gaze upon this enchanting print from Fine Art Finder's collection courtesy of Bridgeman Images, we are transported back in time to witness the everyday existence of French peasants during one of history's most fascinating eras.
