Absolute rubbish - that's how to describe a disco!". In this print from the 1990s, we see Kirsty Mortimer (left) and her sisters Kelly and Siobhan attending a unique event at the Huddersfield ICI Recreation Club. The disco was organized exclusively for members of the Absolute Rubbish Club, who all arrived dressed in creative outfits made entirely out of litter and bin bags. This extraordinary club, run by Kirklees Council Environmental Improvements Unit, aimed to raise awareness about environmental issues among youngsters aged 5 to 11. Through their innovative approach, they encouraged children to think about recycling and waste management while having fun at the same time. The disco itself was an absolute blast! Alongside groovy tunes and energetic dance moves, games and competitions were organized by the unit. As we look back on this nostalgic moment captured by the Huddersfield Examiner Archive's Memory Lane Prints collection, it serves as a reminder of how initiatives like these can shape young minds towards a more sustainable future.
