Stagshaw Bank Fair - Corbridge, Northumberland

Michael Jones reading the rules of the Stagshaw Bank Fair at the Market Cross, Corbridge on Tyne, Northumberland. The Fair, traditionally held on 4th July, was one of the most famous of the country fairs. It included a huge sale of stock, and was proclaimed each year by the bailiff to the Duke of Northumberland. Today the Northumberland County Show, an agricultural event, is held in the fields outside Corbridge each year, a very popular rural event, drawing people from all over Northumberland as well as further afield. It is interesting the card (from 1904) has been annotated (by the sender) with the specific names of the participants and even the pub! The reverse message bemoans the dwindling numbers attending the fair noting " the marts is spoiling the fairs" ! Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, as Michael Jones intently reads the rules of the Stagshaw Bank Fair at the Market Cross in Corbridge, Northumberland, in 1904. The annual fair, held on July 4th, was one of the most renowned country fairs in the region, attracting large crowds from near and far. The fair's significance was underlined by its formal proclamation each year by the bailiff to the Duke of Northumberland. The scene unfolds in the picturesque market town of Corbridge, situated on the banks of the River Tyne. The fairground stretches out beyond the frame, with livestock and animals on display, eager buyers and sellers exchanging goods, and the sounds of laughter and excitement filling the air. The annotated postcard, sent from an unnamed sender, adds a personal touch to the image, with specific names and details included. The names of Charlie Cowen, John Hall, and the Duke's Piper are mentioned, as well as the local pub. The reverse side of the card expresses a sense of nostalgia and regret, with the sender lamenting the dwindling numbers attending the fair and noting, "the marts is spoiling the fairs." Today, the Northumberland County Show, an agricultural event, continues to draw large crowds to the fields outside Corbridge each year, celebrating the region's rich rural heritage and traditions. This photograph serves as a reminder of a time when the Stagshaw Bank Fair was a highlight of the local calendar, bringing together the community in a celebration of agriculture, commerce, and tradition.
