Suffragette Annie Kenney Arrested by Police Officers Oldham cotton-girl Kenny

Suffragette Annie Kenney Arrested by Police Officers
Oldham cotton-girl Kenny joined the Womens Social and Political Union after hearing Christabel Pankhurst at an Independent Labour Party meeting in 1905. The movement had few working-class members, so Kenney was sent to spread the word in Londons East End. She was arrested with Pankhurst on 13 October 1905 after disrupting a meeting at which Liberal minister Sir Edward Grey was speaking - the first women to be arrested in the Suffrage cause. From then until women were finally given the vote, Kenny campaigned and was continually arrested

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the courageous suffragette Annie Kenney being arrested by police officers during a protest in Oldham. Born into a working-class family, Kenney became inspired to join the Women's Social and Political Union after hearing Christabel Pankhurst speak at a meeting in 1905. Recognizing the need for more representation from working-class women, Kenney was sent to London's East End to spread awareness about the suffrage movement. On that historic day of October 13,1905, Kenney and Pankhurst disrupted a meeting where Liberal minister Sir Edward Grey was speaking. This act led to their arrest and marked them as the first women to be detained in pursuit of women's suffrage rights. Undeterred by this setback, Kenny continued her tireless campaigning until women were finally granted the right to vote. The image showcases not only Kenny's bravery but also highlights the ongoing struggle faced by suffragettes throughout this period. The presence of uniformed policemen emphasizes the opposition they encountered from law enforcement while fighting for equal opportunities and political rights. This photograph serves as an important reminder of those who fought passionately for gender equality during the early 20th century. It stands as a testament to their determination and unwavering commitment towards achieving justice for all women.
