Woman police officer W Gould at Woolwich, SE London

Woman police officer Winifred Gould (joined August 1931) photographed outside Woolwich Police Station, SE London. She is wearing the recently updated Stanley uniform -- a white shirt and tie were introduced, the jacket had four buttons and a matching material belt, the hat badge became smaller, the skirt became a little shorter, and shoes replaced boots (although in this photograph boots are worn). The overall effect was greater comfort, practicality and smartness. Date: circa 1931

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the image of Woman Police Officer Winifred Gould, standing proudly outside Woolwich Police Station in SE London. The year is circa 1931, and Officer Gould is depicted in the newly updated Metropolitan Police uniform for women, known as the Stanley uniform. The uniform underwent several changes to enhance comfort, practicality, and smartness. These modifications included the introduction of a white shirt and tie, a jacket with four buttons and a matching material belt, a smaller hat badge, and a shorter skirt. Although boots are worn in this image, they were soon to be replaced by shoes. The overall effect of these updates was to bring greater equality and professionalism to the female officers of the Metropolitan Police Force. Officer Gould's confident pose, with one hand on the armband of her uniform and the other holding her helmet, exudes a sense of duty and determination. The historical significance of this photograph lies in its depiction of a pivotal moment in the evolution of women in policing, as they stepped forward to serve their communities with the same authority and respect as their male counterparts.
