Saint Dominic de Guzman (1170-1221): A 19th Century Colored Engraving of the Founder of the Friars Preachers, Known as the Dominicans or the Order of Preachers (OP) This beautiful and intricately detailed colored engraving depicts Saint Dominic de Guzman, the founder of the Friars Preachers, also known as the Dominicans or the Order of Preachers (OP), in the 13th century. Born in Caleruega, Spain, in 1170, Dominic was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church and Christianism during the Middle Ages. Dominic is shown here wearing the traditional habit of the Dominican Order, which includes a white tunic, a brown scapular, a robe with a white cross, and a chaplet of rosary beads. His tonsure, a distinctive haircut worn by monks and religious figures, is also visible. In his right hand, he holds a book, symbolizing his role as a preacher and scholar. A halo and aureole surround his head, indicating his sainthood. Dominic is often depicted with a dog, represented here at his feet, which is said to have been a gift from the Virgin Mary. The dog, named Felix or Cana, is believed to have accompanied Dominic on his travels and helped him in his missionary work. Dominic founded the Dominican Order in 1216, with the approval of Pope Honorius III. The Order of Preachers was dedicated to evangelization and the pursuit of truth through study and preaching. Dominic's legacy continues to this day, as the Dominicans are known for their educational institutions, monasteries, and charitable works.
