EDITORS COMMENTS
A Moment of History: The Young Royal Children Witness the Spectacle of the 1937 Coronation This evocative drawing captures a significant moment in history as Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, the future Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, respectively, watch the grand coronation ceremony of their grandmother, Queen Mary. The event took place on May 12, 1937, at Westminster Abbey in London. The young princesses, dressed in their finest attire, are seated in the Royal box, gazing intently out onto the Coronation Theatre. Their vantage point offers them a direct view of the throne-chair of St. Edward, where King George VI was being crowned. The girls' fascination is palpable as they take in the historic occasion. On the opposite side of the theatre, the tomb of Aymer de Valance serves as a striking backdrop. The rear wall of the tomb was specially modified to accommodate the cinemaograph operators' window, allowing the recording of the coronation for posterity. The drawing beautifully encapsulates the sense of tradition and continuity as the young royals bear witness to the crowning of their grandmother, a moment that would shape their own futures as monarchs. This poignant image offers a unique perspective on the coronation, providing a glimpse into the personal experiences of the royal family during this momentous occasion.
