EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the Kellett XR-10 helicopter, registration number 45-22793, taking to the skies for the first time on 24 April 1947, at Kellett's North Wales (PA) plant. A proud and determined team of aviation pioneers gathered around the helicopter, marking the successful culmination of years of research and development. From left to right, we see J.D. Driskill, the Chief Test Pilot for Kellett, with a determined expression as he prepares for the flight. Col. A.T. Culbertson, an aviation veteran and witness to the occasion, stands proudly beside him. In the co-pilot's seat, A.W. Bayer looks focused and ready for action. L.L. Douglas, the Chief Engineer, beams with pride as he surveys the helicopter he helped bring to life. Major W.C. Dodds, a trustee, and L.C. Peskin, the Manager of the helicopter division, complete the team. This groundbreaking achievement came with a tragic twist, however. Just over two years later, on 3 October 1949, J.D. Driskill would lose his life in a crash involving this same helicopter. Despite this, the first flight of the Kellett XR-10 remains a significant milestone in the history of helicopter aviation, marking the beginning of a new era in vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
