EDITORS COMMENTS
Roshanara, or Olive Craddock (1894-1926), an extraordinary dancer of Anglo-Indian descent, is depicted in this portrait as she graced the stage at London's Coliseum in 1914. Born in India to an English mother and Anglo-Indian father of Irish extraction, Roshanara's early years were spent immersed in the rich cultural tapestry of the Indian subcontinent. She began learning to dance as a child, and her natural talent and unique background would later set her apart in the world of European dance. In about 1909, Roshanara traveled to Europe and adopted the stage name Roshanara, inspired by a legendary Indian princess. She danced with Loie Fuller's company and in 1911 made her London debut in Oscar Asche's Kismet, taking on the role of Zobeide in Scheherazade with the Ballets Russes at Covent Garden. Her exotic allure and captivating performances soon caught the attention of Anna Pavlova, who invited Roshanara to join her company in 1912. Roshanara's career continued to flourish, and she eventually settled in America, where she died tragically young from appendicitis at the age of thirty-four. This evocative image captures Roshanara in her prime, her expressive eyes and graceful form embodying the enchantment and mystery of the East that captivated audiences in Europe and beyond. A true trailblazer, Roshanara's legacy continues to inspire dancers and artists to this day.
