Portrait of Marie-Adeline Plunkett, 1854. Creator: Richard Buckner

Portrait of Marie-Adeline Plunkett, 1854. Marie Adeline Plunkett was a star of the Romantic ballet. She made her first appearance in the ballet company of her Majesty's Theatre, London in 1843. She was discharged from the company as a result of an incident during a performance involving another dancer who was her rival for the affections of the Earl of Pembroke. In this painting, Buckner based Adeline's pose on the classical statue of Mercury in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence

New pas de quatre...at Her Majesty's Theatre, 1845. Creator: Unknown

New pas de quatre, by Mademoiselles Taglioni, C. Grisi, L. Grahn, and Cerito, at Her Majesty's Theatre, 1845. Ballet on the London stage: ...nothing could be more calculated for effect than the appearance, at the same time, of these four dancers, each possessing a style so peculiarly her own, and each attaining in that style the highest degree of perfection. The buoyant joyousness of Cerito; the stately elegance - the classical poses of Grahn; the graceful archness of Carlotta Grisi; the simplicity - the poetry - the intellectuality of Taglioni's dancing; all these form contrasts of a most perfect and most delightful order...Taglioni, after this year abandons her throne to her fair rivals, who, excellent as they are in their art, have hardly yet learnt to do it so much justice, or to raise it to so high the highest possible standard of excellence is raised for the public taste'. From "Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

Programme for Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin showcase

The cover of the programme for a Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin Gala Performance of Ballet at the Granada, Woolwich, London. In 1950, Markova and Dolin became the co-founders of the Festival Ballet, a company formed to celebrate the imminent Festival of Britain and backed by the Polish businessman Julian Brunsweg. Dolin was to be the company's first Artistic Director, with Markova as Prima Ballerina. The company was formed to tour ballets to audiences that would otherwise be unable to experience ballet, and went on to tour extensively to less conventional venues both in the United Kingdom and internationally. It also established a number of educational programmes designed to make ballet accessible to new audiences. Date: 1950
