EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Romanesque art piece is a chest, known as the Chest of Saint Aemilian of Cogolla, dating back to the middle of the 11th century. It is currently housed in the sacristy of the Monastery of Yuso in San Millan de la Cogolla, La Rioja, Spain. The chest is decorated with intricately carved ivory panels that depict the life of Saint Aemilian, the abbot of the monastery during the 6th century. One of the most notable reliefs on the chest shows the story of the conquest of Cantabria by King Leovigild in 574. In the scene, Leovigild, depicted as a powerful and determined conqueror, is shown on horseback, attacking the Cantabrian people with sword in hand. The Cantabrians, represented as wild and fierce, are shown in various stages of being overpowered by the Visigoth army. The high level of detail and craftsmanship in the carvings demonstrate the artistic skill and religious devotion of the time. The Chest of Saint Aemilian of Cogolla is a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of medieval Spain.
