EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a significant moment in World War One history as King George V (1865-1936) bids farewell to France after a poignant visit to the Western Front. The King, dressed in formal military attire, stands in the open doorway of a car, waving to the crowds gathered on the quayside. His son and heir, the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII (1894-1972), can be seen standing on the running board of the car, also waving to the onlookers. The iron canopy above the quay provides a striking contrast to the modern car and the traditional uniforms of the royal party. The buildings and ironwork in the background add to the sense of a bygone era. The visit to the Western Front was an important morale boost for the troops and the civilian population, demonstrating the support of the British monarchy for the war effort. This historic scene, captured circa 1916, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War.
