Carpet Cloak Feathers Garter Knight Patterned Tights Velvet

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Prince Edward, later known as King Edward VIII, is depicted as a Knight of the Garter in the year 1911. The Prince, who was born on November 23, 1894, is shown wearing the traditional attire of the Order of the Garter, an ancient and most noble order of chivalry founded by King Edward III in 1348. The Prince's outfit consists of a blue velvet cloak, edged with ermine, which is draped over his shoulders. Beneath the cloak, he wears a white, gold-embroidered tunic and a red velvet mantle, both adorned with the royal arms and the badge of the Order. The most distinctive element of the ensemble is the impressive gold helmet, complete with plumes of ostrich feathers, which sits atop his head. The background of the photograph is a beautifully patterned carpet, adding an elegant touch to the image. Two young boys, likely pages, are present in the photograph, one holding the Prince's train and the other standing beside him, looking up at the Prince with admiration. Prince Edward's appointment as a Knight of the Garter took place on June 22, 1911, during the annual investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most senior order in the British monarchy, and its members, known as "Knights and Ladies of the Garter," are chosen by the monarch for their service to the crown. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy, capturing the young Prince Edward in his role as a Knight of the Garter, a title he would hold until his abdication in 1936.
