Garter Garters Investiture Kings Princes Royals Viii

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph taken by D. Knights Whittome on June 10, 1911, at Windsor Castle, we find a young and dashing Prince Edward, later known as King Edward VIII, adorned in the insignia of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The future monarch wears the garter around his left knee, its distinctive inscription, "Honi-soit-qui-mal-y-pense" (shame on him who thinks evil of it), glistening in choice diamonds. This historic moment came after Prince Edward's investiture into the Order of the Garter, an ancient and prestigious British order founded by King Edward III in 1348. The garter, a symbol of chivalry and loyalty to the monarch, was previously owned by the late Duke of Cambridge and was bequeathed to Prince Edward. The photograph captures the essence of Edward's regal charisma and his commitment to his future role as King. The intricate details of the garter, the rich fabric of his uniform, and the grandeur of the castle setting all contribute to the image's timeless allure. This photograph is a testament to the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy, providing a glimpse into the past and offering a connection to the royal lineage that continues to captivate the world. The image of Prince Edward, the future King Edward VIII, wearing the insignia of the Garter, stands as a symbol of his impending reign and the enduring legacy of the monarchy.
