EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Pedro I of Brazil and IV of Portugal (1798-1834), an intriguing figure in the annals of 1st and 19th-century European and South American history. Born in Portugal as Dom Pedro de Alcantara Francisco de Braganza, he ascended to the throne of the Portuguese Empire in 1826 following the abdication of his father, John VI. However, in 1822, Pedro had already declared Brazil's independence from Portugal, becoming its first Emperor. The engraving showcases Pedro I in regal attire, donning the Imperial Crown of Brazil and holding a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other. The globe symbolizes his rule over both Portugal and Brazil, reflecting the complex political landscape of the time. Pedro's age and serious expression convey the weight of responsibility he bore as the founder of the Brazilian Empire. The Algarves and Braganza, two significant territories in Portugal, are subtly referenced in the background of the portrait. Pedro's dual roles as Emperor of Brazil and King of Portugal created a unique situation in European and world history. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the contemporary history of both Portugal and Brazil.
