EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the youthful charm and vibrant energy of Alice Cocea during her rise to fame in the Parisian jazz scene of the 1920s. Born in Romania in 1897, Cocea made a name for herself as a dancer and actress in both Europe and America. She first gained attention in Paris as a danseuse at the Folies-Bergère and went on to appear in several productions at the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques and the Opéra-Comique. One of her most memorable roles was in the revue "En Chemyse" (In Chemise) at the Casino de Paris in 1920, where she performed alongside the famous Russian dancer Sonia Pavloff. The following year, she appeared in the revue "Le Singe Jui Parle" (The Monkey Talks) at the same venue, which was a huge success and solidified her status as a star of the Parisian nightlife. Cocea's beauty and charisma were not limited to the stage. She was also a popular figure in the city's jazz clubs and was known for her love of music and dancing. Her image became synonymous with the spirit of the Roaring Twenties, a time of artistic innovation, liberation, and excitement. This portrait, taken between 1920 and 1924, captures Alice Cocea at the height of her fame and vitality. With her expressive eyes and radiant smile, she exudes a sense of joy and vitality that continues to captivate audiences today. This image is a testament to the enduring legacy of one of the most iconic figures of the jazz age in Paris.
