EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, we witness the final stages of production for Royal Thai Navy's GAF Nomad 24A, registration VH-HBW and military serial number 129215 (MSN 129), at Hawker Pacific in 1978. The Royal Thai Navy (RThN) was expanding its fleet with this versatile turboprop transport aircraft, manufactured by the Government Aircraft Factory (GAF) of Australia. The Nomad 24A, a variant of the successful Nomad series, was renowned for its short takeoff and landing capabilities, making it an ideal choice for the RThN's amphibious operations. The aircraft's spacious cabin could accommodate up to 32 passengers or a combination of cargo and troops, making it a valuable asset for the navy's transportation needs. In this image, we see the Nomad 24A nearing completion, with workers diligently finishing up the exterior details. The distinctive RThN roundel and markings are already in place, adding to the aircraft's military identity. The engines, wings, and landing gear have all been installed, giving the Nomad a commanding presence on the tarmac. The delivery of VH-HBW to the RThN was scheduled for April 1985, and this photograph captures a significant moment in the aircraft's journey from manufacturing to military service. The Nomad 24A would go on to serve the RThN with distinction, contributing to the country's aeronautical transport capabilities for many years to come.
